Entrepreneur Of The Week: Tackling Tribalism a step at a time around Kenya
“All of You have Lamented Unemployment, Corruption, and Tribalism. What are You doing about it?” President Mwai Kibaki asked at a National Youth Summit held at KICC where over 2000 Youth drawn all over Kenya were in attendance.
This became the call for the young men and a lady who after this event, in 2013, started the Vijana Bila Ukabila Peace Initiative that would see them walk from Eldoret, all the way to Mombasa in 39 days this year. The long walk was to speak to the souls of the many who have either been victims or perpetrators of violence because of Tribalism. The statement, “Tuna kabila, lakini si ukabila”, meaning, we are from a tribe, but we are not tribal going to show that in spite of our diversity in tribes, which is inevitable, we do not discriminate against each other because of those tribes.
Vijana Bila Ukabila Peace Initiative is a campaign for Peaceful Coexistence and National Cohesion regardless of Tribe, Religion, and Ethnicity. Their core mandate is to advocate for a Non-Violence Approach to Conflict Resolution, especially among Young People.
“This Nation belongs to us and if We unite to Speak one language and that Language is Peace then the nation will grow.”, they tell the young people. They remind the People, that the unity we have enjoyed the last four years should not be disorganized by Tribal politicians.
The campaign started as a journey of four gentlemen from 29th June to 6th August is now becoming a country movement. Kenyans have responded positively and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) committed to Work with the team in Delivering a Roadmap to Peaceful Election TAGGED ELECTION BILA NOMA.
They will continue to pass Peace Message through various Mediums, Music, Campaign Awareness, Peace Procession, Peace Caravans, Skiza tunes, Social media, Peace Training and Branded Merchandise.
Leadership may look like an elective position to many, but for these men, leadership is being part of the solution. What are the challenges you face daily? What is your solution for them? I tell you maina, maybe we are the answer to all we have been seeking.
